Community Outreach
At Burlington Area Family Practice Center we believe in giving back to the community which provides so much for us. Each year our staff gives freely of their time, talent, and treasures for worthy local causes. While our emphasis is with community health efforts, we also help support numerous community school fundraisers and non-profit youth organizations. Pictured at left, Burlington Area Family Practice Center staff form a human chain to move over 3,000 food items for transport to the Burlington YMCA's Battered Women's Shelter food pantry. Each fall we hold a month-long food drive competition for the shelter. Our drive typically provides enough non-perishable food and personal items to stock the pantry for most of the year.
HawkEye Reader's Choice Awards
The Burlington HawkEye's annual readers choice awards give their readers and the community an opportunity to vote by category for their favorite business or service. Since the program's inception, Burlington Area Family Practice Center receives regular first and second place honors as Burlington's "Favorite Health Facility". Our physicians also consistently sweep the first, second, and third place honors for Burlington's "Favorite Doctor" category. We wish to thank the community and the HawkEye readership for giving us your vote and your patronage.
Iowa Family Physician of the Year
In 2005 the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians named Burlington Area Family Practice Center's David W. Carlson, M.D. the Iowa Family Physician of the Year. The Academy's nomination committee, made up of IAFP board members, reviews hundreds of nomination letters each year, selecting the candidate who best represents the values of the medical specialty of Family Practice. In nomination letters from patients of his medical practice, Dr. Carlson was cited for his committment to quality in medicine (he serves as Medical Director of Great River Medical Services) and volunteerism in the community. As recipient of this honor, Dr. Carlson qualifies as a candidate for the national Family Physician of the Year award, sponsored by the American Academy of Family Practice.
