Founded in 1989, Great River Medical Services d/b/a Burlington Area Family Practice Center was developed by Great River Health Systems following a community health consultant group's survey which found the Des Moines County area had an acute shortage of primary care physicians. A plan was set to create a contemporary group practice to meet the needs of the community.  Soon Dr. James McCabe, a New London native, returned to SE Iowa to join Dr. Gary Mansheim's established Burlington practice. The two then assisted in recruiting Dr. Thomas Boyd and Dr. David Carlson upon completion of their residencies.  These four became the nucleus for growing a modern medical group practice when our new facility opened in the fall of 1990 as the first facility located in what is now the Great River Medical Center campus in West Burlington, IA.

Today, following two major facility expansions since 1990, Burlington Area Family Practice Center is the home of 15 board certified Family Practice physicians, a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, an Iowa-licensed Clinical Psychologist and an Iowa-licensed Mental Health Counselor.  In keeping with our mission, we continue to expand our service offerings, all in one location, to deliver true convenience and lower costs to you. We offer onsite pharmacy, a state of the art laboratory, x-ray, bone densitometry, diagnostic EKGs, laser treatments for dermatologic conditions and hair removal, and more.
